Welcome to The MovieUpdates Exchange, a weekly newsletter about startups and markets. It is inspired by the daily MovieUpdates+ column from which it gets its name. Every Saturday in your inbox? Signing up here†
When you start a project, it’s easy to get caught up in it. Then time passes and suddenly it’s half a decade ago. Equity, a podcast I got to help start when I wasn’t even working here, is one such project. So is The Exchange.
The day after I came out of rehab, in 2016, I started writing a column about daily markets. The project, then called the “Editor’s Morning Message,” evolved over time. When I joined Crunchbase and founded Crunchbase News, it was renamed Morning Markets. When I was lucky enough to return to MovieUpdates, it relaunched without a name.
Henry Pickavet, a MovieUpdates name you don’t see much of but implicitly appreciate thanks to its extensive behind-the-scenes work, helped rename the series. For example, The Exchange returned at the end of 2019. Later we added a weekly newsletter, exactly the message you are reading now.
This is definitely not MovieUpdates’s biggest newsletter – Daily Crunch is much bigger. But the Exchange email has long been a place for me to post bits of reporting I had laying around, and deal with topics and questions in a more relaxed way than usual. It really has been a weekly joy.
This is also the last time I’m going to write it for a while. Anna Heim, who you probably know by now for her regular and vital contributions to The Exchange, will be taking over starting next week. She can ask me to kick in a few words here and there, or not. It will be her.
What I can promise is that Anna and I are very much aligned in our approach to startups, venture capital and the business environment of each. She has been an incredible co-writer and forced me to plan more. I am beyond grateful for her past contributions, and stoked for what she has to come.
Why the change? Since I took over as editor-in-chief of MovieUpdates+, I have less time for certain tasks. I gave up writing most of Daily Crunch and withdrew 99% from writing news (startup funding rounds and the like) so I could double down on hiring and working to get our job done faster and with more bang for the buck. to get. We’ll see how well I do there and I welcome your feedback†
You know, if you haven’t joined TC+ yet, now is a good time to do so, as we are busy with staffing. So sign up and participate.
But I’m increasingly under water when it comes to time, and that means that this newsletter with its 40,000 or 50,000 readers has fallen so far off my list of priorities that it makes no sense for me to selfishly hold on to it. It needs someone who can give it – you – the proper attention.
So I leave you in Anna’s hands. The change will be an upgrade, and I hope you enjoy Anna. You can follow her on Twitter here†
I will still write the daily column, often with Anna as before. But from now on Saturday is Anna’s domain. Big hug, thank you and keep going! — Alex
