Using a TikTok video template

You can make a great TikTok video by doing nothing but just talking to the camera. However, if you want to do something a little more exclusive or are still unsure of your own ability to spice up your video, you can start with some of the pre-designed templates that come with the app.

Templates make it easy to create a vibrant, complex video. All you need to do is insert your own photos and/or videos into the template and you’re done. (Of course, you can also add your own text, sounds, effects, and more.)

To use a template, follow these steps:

  • Tap the plus sign at the bottom of the screen to start a new video.
  • Select Templates. (You will find it next to the Story label at the bottom of the screen.)

Tiktok home screen

First tap the plus sign to start a new video.

At the bottom right, select Templates.

  • Swipe through the prepared templates that come with the app. Last time I looked I had 61, but the number may vary. Each template has a descriptive name at the top, and below that is how many photos you can use with the template. Some have a minimum and a maximum (say, two to five photos), while others just have a maximum (up to, say, five photos). When you see one you like, tap the big one upload photos knob.
  • You will be taken to the photo area of your device. Don’t worry about forgetting how many photos you can use; you will find the number at the bottom left of your screen.

Each template can use a certain number of photos.

Select the photos you want to include.

  • Once TikTok has finished processing the photos, they will be placed in the template.

From here you can make some additional changes. For example, you can add stickers, adjust the effects or add a voice over. The rest of the process of saving and posting a TikTok video is the same as always.

Edit Template Choices

You have several ways to customize your video, even with a template.

Post page

After that, you have all the usual options for posting a video.

But what if you don’t like one of the templates TikTok has provided? There is a variety of free templates and tools offered by a plethora of companies and creators such as Zoomerang and Canva. But be wary: While these and other services offer free templates, you may encounter watermarks, ads, or other add-ons that you may want to avoid.
